Addressing Critical Drainage Issues with Precision
We do alot of Stormwater damage work. Stormwater management is crucial to maintaining the structural integrity of your property and preventing water damage. Recently we faced a challenging task in Essendon, nice and close to our headquarters. The job involved a homeowner who had discovered a broken downpipe and a blocked stormwater drain, complicating the property’s drainage system. This post details our comprehensive approach to resolving these issues, highlighting our commitment to quality and efficiency.

Initial Assessment: Identifying the Problem
The issue began with a broken downpipe on the right-hand side of the house, which was further complicated by a line of bricks above old terra cotta pipes that had collapsed. Contributing to the complexity, a large tree’s roots likely infiltrated and damaged the pipes, exacerbating the blockage and collapse.
Strategic Approach to Stormwater Line Replacement
Understanding the severity of the situation, our team at Melbourne Plumbing Co. devised a plan to not only repair the damage but also enhance the home’s overall stormwater management system.
Here’s how we addressed the problem:
Site Preparation:
Removal of Obstructions: The first step involved removing the bricks and concrete section covering the old stormwater line. This process was crucial to accessing the damaged pipes and clearing the path for new installations.
Excavation: Careful excavation was conducted around the large tree to avoid further damage to its roots and to prepare the trench for the new piping.
Installation of New Stormwater Line:
- Preparing the Bed: We laid 1/4 minus screenings to create a stable and level bed for the new pipe. This preparation is essential for ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of the stormwater system.
- Laying New Pipes: A new 90mm stormwater line was installed from the downpipe at the front of the property straight to the street. This new line was designed to offer improved durability and resistance to root intrusions and other common issues.
- Backfilling: After the pipe was securely laid, we backfilled the trench with the excavated spoil, ensuring the site was returned to its original condition as much as possible.

Cleanup and Disposal:
Removing Debris: All concrete rubble and excavated debris were removed from the property and disposed of responsibly, ensuring that the area was left clean and tidy.
